Our hotel mattresses and bed bases are designed to endure. We use natural materials and take extra special care putting these materials together, using handmade production techniques

Organic Materials

Naturalmat are pioneers in natural fibre technology and have developed the most comfortable range of mattresses using innovative new raw materials.

Organic Wool

Our organic lambswool comes from Soil Association certified farms in Devon, Dorset and Somerset. It is processed on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart which is re-cycled back into the river afterwards. Then we add an extract of essential oils (lavender, lemon and eucalyptus) to make it anti-dust mite, anti-bed bug and anti-moth.

Wool is also a natural fire retardant so all our tuftings are chemical free.

Organic Coir

Coir (coconut fibre) is the prime ingredient in our mattresses. Only Naturalmat use certified organic coir and we get it from the only certified organic coconut plantation in the world.

Coir ensures unbeatable airflow, superior spring and excellent support to promote healthy, natural sleep.

Organic Latex

Latex comes from the sap of the rubber tree. Once collected, it is pumped full of tiny air pockets, creating a foamy white froth, before it is set in a large oven.

The latex layer provides an immensely supportive core that is naturally breathable and totally hypo-allergenic.

Horsetail Hair

Horsehair is one of the most highly prized materials in the upholstery industry. It has long been used in mattress making because of its incredible resilience and superior spring.

We needle the horsehair on to a hessian backing, which provides extra strength and protection for the springs, while still allowing flexibility for independent movement.

Cashmere

One of the softest fibres available, cashmere is the ultimate in luxury natural fibres. The soft spring provided by cashmere gives an added dimension of comfort.

Like wool, cashmere has inherent properties of ventilation and insulation and the quality of the fibre helps to create the most sumptuous mattress in our range.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a very sustainable natural fibre, as the bamboo plant is very quick growing and does not require the use of pesticides to thrive.

Bamboo is highly water absorbent, able to take in up to three times its weight in water. This quality allows the bamboo to draw moisture away from the skin, keeping you cool and comfortable.

Cotton

All our cotton is grown according to fair trade policies and is certified by Controle Union to GOTS standards. Organic cotton does not use harmful pesticides and is therefore free from all chemicals.

Cotton has a unique ability to ventilate and draw away humidity and perspiration, enabling the body to keep an even temperature.

Made by Hand

All our mattresses are made by hand in our purpose-built factory in Topsham, on the banks of the River Exe, Devon. We believe that people, not machines, make a superior, longer lasting product. Our team of craftspeople ensure every stitch, every fibre, every tufting button and every cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked.

When a mattress leaves our factory, we are confident it will give years of long lasting comfort.

Sustainability

In 1999 when we set out to make a mattress we took a different approach to the rest of the trade. We could not understand why the majority of mattresses were made using man made synthetic materials that were neither biodegradable nor from a sustainable source, what's more they presented questionable sleep and supportive benefits to the mattress.

We believed that natural fibres were best, and we set out to make a mattress that contained just that and did not have any chemical additives whatsoever. We also wanted to make sure that our packaging was environmentally friendly. Since then we have continued to develop our range and improve our products, remaining true to our guiding principles.

All the ingredients that go into a Naturalmat are 100% natural and are from a sustainable resource that is harvested according to Fair Trade principles. Where possible we buy from local sources and we always make an effort to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible. At the end of their life all our materials are 100% biodegradable, so they will return to nature as nature intended.

A High Quality Alternative

Naturalmat won the contract to manufacture all the bed bases, mattresses and toppers for the new Qbic Hotel in London and has previously completed many high profile new hotel ventures, such as Yotel New York and all the new Z Hotels.

Other work has included Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Cliveden, Chewton Glen and The Wellesley, as well as other high profile clients such as The Connaught and Claridges.

Naturalmat mattresses offer hoteliers a high quality alternative to poor, low grade synthetic mattresses which have a short life span and offer limited levels of comfort. With their aim of achieving the perfect natural sleeping environment, naturalmat has created a long lasting, sustainable product that is highly environmentally responsible and performs significantly better than its synthetic alternative in terms of comfort and durability.
