Key Hotel Design Trends 2015 – Sustainability continues to drive thinking

The hospitality industry is still exploring on how to further reduce their carbon footprints – a focus on sustainability, reducing emissions and conservation of energy continues to be an active task of hotels. Automatic shut off lights to save energy and embracing the use of natural lighting are some of the key drivers to improving hotel environment and efficiency.

Hoteliers are renewing their commitment to global responsibility towards climate change and flagging this commitment to guests wherever they can.. Salvaged materials are also appearing more and more in hotels interiors with reclaimed wood, metal and stone playing a major role. Blurring the indoors and outdoors with large windows, natural lighting and beautiful, botanical bedroom decor in combination with sustainable recyclable materials is a major hotel design theme in 2015.

Following on from last month’s discussion with Naturalmat Co-founder Mark Tremlett, we explore sourcing materials and product quality.

How do you source your materials?

“We look at our suppliers very much holistically. The fact that their materials are right for us, is very much the start of the journey. There are many factors we then have to consider…do our suppliers operate in an ethical and sustainable way? Do our suppliers look after their staff and share our ethical approach? Frankly it’s not straight forward finding these partners and they very rarely offer the cheapest offering, but it’s a process that is ultimately fulfilling and we’ve ended up with business partners who we trust implicitly”

What do you consider to be the most important facet of your products?

“I often cite quality above sustainability as being the number one principle of our business simply because we believe the two things are completely symbiotic. Poor quality leads to a reduction in the lifespan of any product and it is this limited lifecycle which generates further production requirement. Ultimately if our products last, that this in itself has the biggest impact on reducing resource and energy requirement.”

Thumbs Up From The Hotel Inspector

Channel 5’s Hotel Inspector paid a visit to the Albion House Hotel in Ramsgate this April. The hotel, contained in a stunning building constructed in 1791 was in desperate need of renovation and the show documented the ups and downs of the hotels return to glory. Now lovingly restored, Albion House Hotel combines grandeur with a beautifully finished, boutique style.

Naturalmat were selected to provide a complete bed (base and mattress) for the hotel and the team here at Naturalmat Hotel are delighted with the positive response we received.

Natural Sleep, Natural Hotels

Naturalmat are teaming up with sleep and industry experts in June to kick start a series of breakfast seminars, exploring how hotels can help guests get a refreshing, natural night’s sleep. The first seminar will explore two themes; the psychology of natural sleep and the latest trends in hotel sustainability.

Christabel Majendie MSc, Naturalmats very own sleep expert, will be offering advice and tips on how hotels can help guests get the very best nights sleep and Fran Hughes, Head of Programmes at the International Tourism Partnership, will talk about the rising trend of sustainability in the hotel industry.

The event will be hosted at The Vista Rooftop bar, The Trafalgar Hotel, Trafalgar Square, London on June 3rd between 8am and 10am.

Naturalmat Hotel is working with some of the most innovative names in the hotel world and its an incredibly dynamic period for the business. We’ve recently provided organic mattresses for one of the most imaginative and celebrated hotel rooms in London. A room which is also a spectacular artwork by the renowned sculptor Antony Gormley.

Antony Gormley’s ROOM forms part of a suite of rooms. A  mysterious space, its creation allowed the artist to ‘sculpt darkness’, encouraging the occupant to enter a different state of consciousness, to enjoy at the very least a meditative pause, a moment of withdrawal from the pulsating world outside. The suites sleeping area forms the centre point for the work and is found by ascending a secretive white staircase which leads to a pristine bed, complete with a Naturalmat mattress.
